Phantom Space

Duo show at Gammelgaard, 2024 Freya Sif Hestnes and Johanne Rude Lindegaard have created their first joint exhibition for Gammelgaard. In Phantom Space, the two artists create dialogues between painting and video, based on a shared desire to sharpen our sensory apparatus. Motifs are doubled, overlapped and create new perceptions in this meeting point for abstract painting and a photographic, figurative expression.

Johanne Rude Lindegaard’s paintings appear as atmospheric portals or openings on the walls. Other, more monumental paintings, are installed hanging in free space from the high ceilings of the exhibition spaces, thereby inviting the viewer to examine the works from alternative angles, opening them up to different perspectives. The abstract motifs are activated by Freya Sif Hestnes’ objects and video works, projected onto the large painted canvases, making the pictorial worlds of the two artists merge.

The exhibition contains a series of phantoms, something imagined or ‘afterimages’ of earlier events. On one hand, it challenges our conventional idea of reality.
